PURPOSE: To form black stripes with a small number of processes, by overlapping PGB filters on electrodes, which are arranged on a substrate and constitute many optical switches, in the space between electrodes.

CONSTITUTION: Electrodes 1, 2, and 3 having a width (b) are provided leaving a space of a length (a) on the surface of a substrate 5, and three color filters 110, 120, and 130 are arranged on these electrodes, and adjacent color filters overlap in the gap part (a) between electrodes. The width of color filters is set to a length b+2a to make the width of the overlap part coincident with the width of gap parts. Each color filter absorbs two colors of three primary colors and permits one color to transmit through, and thus, three primary colors are absorbed in overlap parts (a) on any combination of color filters, and overlap parts (a) have the same function as black stripes. It is desirable that respective filters are selected to have the same density.
