PURPOSE: To execute the exact comparison processing even by a small number of samples by expressing a fluctuation of every unit time in a sample pattern by a membership function for constituting a fuzzy set.

CONSTITUTION: A feature pattern input part 1 inputs a written signature. A fuzzy template generating part 2 generates a template, based on coordinate data inputted from the input part 1 at the time of registering the signature, and a template storage part 3 stores the template generated in the generating part 2. A pattern comparing and deciding part 4 compares data of an unknown pattern inputted from the input part 1 at the time of collating the signature with the template of the registered pattern stored in the storage part 3, and calculates its distance. The registered pattern is constituted as a fuzzy set expressed by a membership function of every unit time, based on plural sample patterns inputted in advance, and an exact collation result can be obtained.
