PURPOSE: To increase the processing speed of the device and to improve the versatility by displaying a character-modification character type and a modified part at optional coordinates at a high speed.

CONSTITUTION: This pattern generation device is equipped with pattern specifying means 3 and 5 which specify the display coordinates and painting-out pattern of the character-modification character type and the display coordinates and painting-out pattern of the modified part of character modification, a work memory 11 stored with character data corresponding to the character- modification font specified by the pattern specifying means 3 and 5, a character modification generating means 13 which paints out the character data stored in the work memory 11 with the painting-out pattern of the character- modification font specified by the pattern specifying means 3 and 5 and with the painting-out pattern of the modified part of character modification, and a display coordinate transfer means 13 which transfers the character- modification font to the display coordinates of the font by the corresponding pattern specifying means.
