To reduce a secondary collision impact near the rear end of an engine room while keeping traveling performance in a vehicle in which a protection area from a secondary collision is set near the rear end of the engine room.
A pedestrian protection device for a vehicle provided at a vehicle body front portion 13 includes: an engine room 3; a cowl box 9 provided at an upper portion of a dash panel 19 and extending in a vehicle width direction; and an engine hood 7 pivotally connected with the vehicle body 13 via a first hinge 59 with a focus on a rear end 7b so as to cover the upper portion of the engine room 3. An engine-hood guide mechanism 15 guides the entire engine hood 7 upward and rearward so as to cover the cowl box 9, a wiper device, and the lower portion of the front pillar when a collision of a pedestrian against a front bumper face 13b is detected or predicted, and lowers the entire engine hood 7 downwardly when a load acting on the engine hood 7 exceeds a specified load.
