PURPOSE: To enhance degree of purification of exhaust gas at low temp. at a time for starting up of an engine by utilizing an inorganic porous body as a main component and mixing a sintering agent for reinforcement therewith and thereafter sintering this mixture and forming a pellet for carrying a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An inorganic porous body is utilized as a main component which has extremely small longitudinal pores having pore diameter not larger than 100 and has large surface area. A sintering agent for reinforcement such as γ-alumina, silica and zirconia is mixed therewith. A pellet for carrying a catalyst is formed by sintering this mixture. Concretely, slurry is prepared by adding 100 pts.wt. water to a mixture consisting to 100 pts.wt. sepiolite powder and 10 pts.wt. γ-alumina powder. This slurry is introduced into the hopper 5 of a kneader and kneaded by a screw 6 and thereafter this kneaded material is extruded through an extrusion die 9 and discharged as a strand. The pellet 1 for carrying the catalyst is obtained by granulating and working this strand and thereafter calcining it.
