PURPOSE: Penicillins I [R1 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, etc.; R2 is H, or R1 and R2 together may form a cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl etc. with the adjacent C atom; A is H, halogen, OH, nitro, cyano, etc.; X and Y are O, S, or groups II, III, IV (R3,4 are H, halogen, carboxyl, alkyl, etc.)], their non-toxic salt or ester; e.g. D(-)-α-(3-methyl-2,4-dioxo-1-imidazolidinyl-carbonylamino)benzylpenicillin sadium salt.
