Abstract:

To provide a method for producing a perfume composition with a small number of processes, low cost and high yield, and having an advantage in any of economy, load to environment, or possibility for industrialization, and to provide a perfume composition having an excellent improved and enhanced aromatic characteristics imparted e.g. with a natural feeling and volume.

This method for producing 5-methyl-5-(4-methyl-3-pentenyl)-4,5- dihydro-2(3H)-furanone comprises reacting methylheptenone with trimethylsulfoxonium-ylide to obtain an epoxide, condensing a malonic acid ester with it in the presence of a base, then passing through alkaline hydrolysis, dehydration with ring closure and decarboxylation, and the perfume composition containing the above compound is also provided.
