Abstract:

To provide a periphery monitoring system for vehicles such as plug-in hybrid vehicles, which suppresses wasteful power consumption and reduces the occurrence of unnecessary alarms.

A periphery monitoring system for vehicles includes: a remote controller 108 carried by an operator 110 and having a security mode switch; a radar 102 for monitoring a periphery of a vehicle 101 and outputting monitoring information; a communication device 109 for communicating with the remote controller 108; a horn 111 for generating alarms; and a control device 107 for operating the horn according to the monitoring information outputted by the radar. When the vehicle is under charging and the operator turns on the security mode, the control device activates the radar 102, and when the activated radar detects that an object in the periphery of the vehicle is approaching by a distance equal to or less than a predetermined distance, the control device makes the horn generate alarm sound.
