To provide a permanent magnet alloy for a medical imaging system, and to provide a method of making the same.
The composition of matter suitable for use as a permanent magnet (53) includes a rare earth-transition metal-boron alloy, where at least 30 weight percent of the rare earth content of the alloy comprises Pr, at least 50 weight percent of the transition metal content of the alloy comprises Fe, and the alloy contains less than 0.6 weight percent oxygen. In another preferable embodiment, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system provided with yoke having a first part, a second part and an at least one third part connecting the first part and the third part, wherein an image pickup volume is formed between the first and second yoke parts is provided, and the above permanent magnet is used therein.
