To provide a PMR head suitable for high-density recording.
The PMR head has a magnetic pole layer having: an end surface exposed to an ABS; a trailing surface including a trailing edge; and a leading surface including a leading edge. A thickness determined by the interval between the trailing surface and the leading surface along the ABS varies with the distance from the ABS. The magnetic pole layer includes: a first part whose thickness increases with the distance from the ABS to reach a maximum thickness; a second part connected with the first part whose thickness is constant and equal to the maximum thickness; a third part where the thickness is constant and thinner than in the second part; and a fourth part connecting the second part and the third part whose thickness decreases with the distance from the ABS.
