Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain uniform refractive index anisotropy to large area by constituting the phase plate by laminating drawn plastic films which have refractive index anisotropy in a film surface so that a main optical axis having a large refractive index between two optical main axis directions in each film surface is mutually parallel. CONSTITUTION:The phase plate 1 is constituted by laminating the drawn plastic films 1a-1c which have small retardation. Then, those films 1a-1c are laminated so that the main axis X(X1, X2, X3) in the direction where the refractive index is large between the optical main axes (X1, X2, X3) and Y(Y1, Y2, Y3) (where nX is the X-directional refractive index and nY is the Y-directional refractive index and nX is larger than nY. Thermoplastic high polymer films of polycarbon ate, polystyrene, etc., in addition to polyvinyl alcohol and cellulose triacetate are usable as films 1a-1c. Further, the films may be made of a mixture of them. Consequently, the refractive index anisotropy is uniformed to large area.
