Title:
PHENOL-GROUP-CONTAINING VINYL ALCOHOL POLYMER
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3720468
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a modified vinyl alcohol polymer having a phenolic hydroxyl group and excellent functional properties and being useful as a textile size, a textile processing or the like by introducing a specified amount of specified phenolic-hydroxyl-containing units into a vinyl alcohol polymer.
SOLUTION: This polymer is obtained by introducing 0.01-30mol% units each represented by formula I or II (wherein R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are each H, an 8C or lower hydrocarbon group which may contain a substituent; A is a divalent hydrocarbon group which may contain an atom such as nitrogen, oxygen or sulfur; S is a sulfur atom; and X is a monovalent group containing a phenolic hydroxyl) into a vinyl alcohol polymer mainly consisting of vinyl alcohol units. It can be produced by for example a method comprising reacting a copolymer of a vinyl ester monomer with an epoxy vinyl monomer (e.g. allyl glycidyl ether) with a phenolic-hydroxyl-containing thiol (e.g. 2- hydroxythiophenol) and hydrolyzing the product.
