Abstract:
The polymer compsns. (PC) contains repeating units of formula (I). In (I): which M<1> = a monomer unit, i.e. (meth)acrylate, 2-chloro-acrylate, 2-phenylacrylate, opt. lower alkyl N-substd. (meth)acrylamide, 2-chloro- or 2-phenyl-acrylamide, vinyl ether, vinyl ester, styrene deriv. or siloxane; S<1> = spacer unit, e.g. single bond, alkylene (opt. mono- or poly-substd. with F, Cl or CN), i.e. -(CH2)r-, -(CH2)rO-, -(CH2)rO(CH2)s-, -(CH2)rO(CH2)sO-, -(CH2)rCO-, -(CH2)r-COO-, -(CH2)rOCO- -(CH2)rNR<2>-, -(CH2)rCONR<2>-, -(CH2)rNR<2>CO-, -(CH2)rNR<2>CONR<3>-; r and s = 1-20; r + s = not more than 20; R<2> and R<3> = H or lower alkyl; ring A = phenylene, pyridine-2,5-diyl, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, 1,3-dioxan-2,5-diyl, 1,4-cyclohexylene, piperidine-1,4-diyl or piperazine-1,4-diyl (all opt. substd. with F, Cl, CN, alkyl or alkoxy); ring B = opt. substd. (as for A) phenylene, pyridine-, pyrimidine or 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, 1,4- or 2,6-naphthylene or 1,4-cyclohexylene; Y<1> and Y<2> = single bond, -(CH2)t-, -O-, -CO-, -COO-, -OCO-, -NR<4>-, -CONR<4>-, -NR<4>CO-, -(CH2)uO-, -O(CH2)u-, -(CH2)uNR<4>- or -NR<4) = H or lower alkyl; t = 1-4; u = 1-3; m and n = 0 or 1; ring C = opt. substd. (as for A) phenylene, or pyridine- or pyrimidine- 2,5-diyl, 2,5-thiophenylene, 2,5-furanylene, or 1,4- or 2,6- naphthylene; Z = O or NR<5>; and R<5> = H or lower alkyl, or a second gp. D; D = opt. F- or Cl-substd. 1-20C alkylene or opt. F-, Cl-, alkyl- or alkoxy-substd. 3-8C cycloalkyl. Also claimed are: (i) copolymer compsns. (CPC) and homopolymer compsns. (HPC) contg. units of formula (I) with or without other units; (ii) the 4-Ä(E)-2-methoxycarbonyl-vinylÜ-phenyl ester of 4-(but-3- enyloxy)-benzoic acid and the 2-methoxy-4-Ä(E)-2-methoxycarbonyl- vinylÜ-phenyl ester of 4-Ä6-(2-methyl-acryloyl-oxy)-hexyloxyÜ- benzoic acid; and (iii) electro-optical devices in which the above 3-arylacrylic acid esters and amides are used as orientation layers for liq. crystals (LC).
