To provide a photocatalyst comprising a compound oxide that can continuously arbitrarily control optical band gaps.
When this photocatalyst is denoted by the formula: ABxC2-xD3-xMxO10-x, A stands for one or more elements selected from the group consisting of alkali metal elements and hydrogen, B stands for one or more elements selected from among trivalent elements, C stands for one or more elements selected from among bivalent elements, M stands for one or more elements selected from the group consisting of transition metal elements, and x is a number of (0<x≤2).
