Abstract:

To provide a photocatalytic, hydrophilic coating compsn. which possesses excellent long-term storage stability and, upon photoexcitation, highly hydrophilizes the surface of a member and maintains the hydrophilicity by dispersing photocatalytic titanium oxide particles in a coating forming element comprising siloxane.

Into a coating forming element comprising a siloxane represented by formula I (R represents H or a monovalent org. group; X represents an alkoxy or a halogen; 0<p<2; and 0<q<4) are dispersed titanium oxide particles having a surface coated with a hydrolyzable silane deriv. represented by formula II (R and X are each as defined above; and p is 1 or 2). Photoexcutation is conducted to photocatalytically replace at least part of org. groups bonded to the silicon atom in the silicone molecule on the surface of the coating by hydroxyl groups, and the surface of the coating is hydrophilized according to the photoexcitation. An excitation light dose of not less than 0.001mW/cm2 suffices for highly hydrophilizing the surface of the substrate. Light sources utilizable herein include sunlight and light from a mercury lamp. The thickness of the surface layer is pref. not more than 0.4μm, and the contact angle between the surface and water is pref. not more than 10°.
