Abstract:

To provide a photocathode and an electron tube capable of efficiently emitting photoelectron excited by incident light.

The photocathode 1 is provided with a light absorption layer 2 excited by the incident light L1 to generate photoelectron e1, an electron emission layer 3 formed on the surface of the light absorption layer for receiving photoelectron e1 from the light absorption layer 2 and emitting the photoelectron e1 outward by an electric field impressed inside, an active layer 4 for lowering a work function of the surface of the electron emission layer 3, and a gate electrode 5 for impressing an electric field inside the electron emission layer 3, and the electron emission layer 3 contains carbon nanotube (CNT). The photoelectron e1 moves inside the CNT contained in the electron emission layer 3 by the electric field impressed inside the electron emission layer 3. Since an electric field is centered on the surface of the electron emission layer 3, that is, a tip part of the CNT, the photoelectron e1 is easily emitted into the vacuum from the tip part of the CNT.
