Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce the catalyst capable of efficiently exerting its catalytic effect with sunlight by using a metallic oxide as the semiconductor in a photodecomposition catalyst produced through enclosing a semiconductor excitable with sunlight within a cation- or anion-exchange layer compound.
CONSTITUTION: This catalyst is produced by enclosing a semiconductor excitable with sunlight within a cation- or anion-exchange layer compound to form a clathrate compound, wherein a metallic oxide is used as the semiconductor. At this time, a salt compound contg. a metallic ion and the cation-exchange layer compound are subjected to ion exchange with each other and thereafter the resulting metallic ion- containing compound is decomposed, or a sol of a metallic compound and a cation- exchange layer compound are subjected to ion exchange with each other to enclose the metallic oxide in the spaces among the layers of the layer compound. Alternatively, a chelating agent contg. a Fe3+ ion and an anion-exchange layer compound are subjected to ion exchange with each other and thereafter oxidized with an aq. solution contg. an oxidizing agent to form a clathrate compound through enclosing iron oxide in the spaces among the layers of the anion-exchange layer compound. Accordingly, by using the catalyst, the photodecomposition of water or reduction of carbon dioxide is efficiently performed.
