Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoelectric cathode which absorbs light rays to be detected with a wavelength of 225 nm or longer and emitting photoelectrons to vacuum and to provide an electron tube provided with the photoelectric cathode.
SOLUTION: This photoelectric cathode for exciting photoelectrons by absorbing light rays to be detected and emitting the photoelectrons to vacuum comprises a semiconductor light absorbing layer 4 which emits photoelectrons by absorbing the light rays to be detected, a semiconductive electron emitting layer 6 having an energy gap wider than that of the semiconductive light absorbing layer 4, capable of transmitting photoelectrons, and formed on the semiconductive light absorbing layer 4, a first electrode 10 formed in a part of the surface of the semiconductive electron emitting layer 6, an active layer 8 formed on the part of the exposed surface of the semiconductive electron emitting layer 6, where a first electrode 10 is not formed and lowering the work function, and a second electrode 12 connected with the semiconductive light absorbing layer 4. The semiconductive electron emitting layer 6 is made of diamond, polycrystalline diamond, diamond-like carbon, or a material which contains diamond as the main component.
