Title:
LIGHT DETECTION AND RANGING (LIDAR) ICE DETECTION SYSTEM
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP2019023615
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
To provide a system of detecting and quantifying ice accretion on and ice shedding from an aircraft.SOLUTION: An ice detector 200 comprises one or more LIDAR devices on an aircraft. Each of the LIDAR devices includes a transmitter 202 and a receiver 214. Each of the transmitters repetitively scans an aerodynamic surface 226 on the aircraft using laser pulses 206, forming scattered laser pulses 220 scattered from the aerodynamic surface. Each of the receivers comprises an ice detector 218, which receives the scattered laser pulses and outputs data comprising timing of the scattered laser pulses received in the receiver. Temporal changes in coordinates of the aerodynamic surface, indicating ice accumulation on and/or ice shedding from the aerodynamic surface, are calculated from the output data.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
