To provide a polymer which is suitable for hole injection and has a polymer backbone (e.g. a polyacrylate, polystyrene, or polyethylene backbone) having hole transfer groups (e.g. arom. tert-amino, carbazole, or pyrazoline groups) and photocrosslinkable groups (e.g. cinnamic acid deriv. groups or furylacrylic acid deriv. groups).
Vinylcarbazole and 4-chloromethylstyrene are thermally reacted under pressure in the presence of a polymn. initiator to produce a copolymer (A) of vinylcarbazone and 4-chloromethylstyrene. Separately, furylacrylic acid and DBU are thermally dissolved in an org. solvent under stirring to form a salt. Then, copolymer A is added to the soln. of the salt and is subjected to reaction under heating for a predetermined time. The resultant product is taken out, thus giving a polymer having structural units represented by formula III having, as the side chains, hole transfer groups (e.g. carbazole groups represented by formula I) and photocrosslinkable groups (e.g. furylacrylic acid deriv. groups represented by formula II).
