PURPOSE: To enable a complicated character layout to be achieved easily and accurately by storing a plurality of reference lines, and changing the reference line to be used at an intermediate point in a printing line according to a change in a layout form.
CONSTITUTION: A CPU 50 calculates the positions of reference lines based on a character size and a character form, through setting the reference lines for the first character '' (new). Here, the positions of an upper reference line UL and a lower reference line BL are calculated. Next, the character size is changed, and the layout form is changed to flush top. In calculating the printing positions for characters, the CPU 50 uses the upper reference line UL as a reference line, and calculates moving quantities for the characters so that the top ends of vertual bodies of the characters will conform with the line UL. An image which would be obtained if the characters were printed in this condition is verified on a CRT screen, and the operator moves the printing positions of the characteristic as indicated by an arrow 104. The movement can be performed for one character at a time, by giving instructions through a cursor. Similarly, ' ' (performance phototypesetter) are printed following ' ' (high), whereby the characters can be printed with at least the top ends thereof flush with each other.
