To provide a photovoltaic element capable of reducing recombination loss without increasing resistance loss.
In the photovoltaic element 1, an intermediate p layer 45 is provided between a p layer 44 and an i layer 46. In the intermediate p layer 45, an SP2/SP3 coupling ratio is increased and a dope amount is reduced for the p layer 44. Thus, the dispersion of impurities from the p layer 44 to the i layer 46 to increase the recombination loss is prevented by the intermediate p layer 45. Further, in the intermediate p layer 45, the SP2/SP3 coupling ratio is increased for the p layer 44, so that film resistance is made to be comparable even when the dope amount is reduced. That is because the film resistance comparable to the conventional one is maintained even when the dope amount is small, since, when the SP2/SP3 coupling ratio is increased in the intermediate p layer 45, it gets close to graphite which is a conductor and the film resistance declines.
