To provide a photovoltaic element having a high efficiency of photoelectric conversion, and for which a semiconductor material with no impurity can be used, and which has superior reliability and durability.
A semiconductor layer 4 includes a compound semiconductor including heterogeneous atoms. An inner electrical field is generated by difference of electronegativity between atoms to facilitate migration of photoexcited electrons.
