Abstract:

To provide a picture display device that reduces power consumption as much as possible by securing brightness allowing visual recognition of only a point part of a picture.

A picture compression rate power saving processor 111 of a micro computer 110 calculates, when compressed picture data is input, a compression rate for each area in an LED backlight of the picture data, and defines a picture having a low compression rate as a point part thereof and sets high luminance to an area of the picture. The picture compression rate power saving processor 111 expands the compressed picture data to add the luminance, and outputs the picture data to an LED area active controller 120. The LED area active controller 120 extracts the luminance from the picture data to set the luminance to LED data, and outputs the LED data to an LED controller 130. The LED controller 130 performs luminance control for each area of an LED backlight 152 on the basis of the luminance of the LED data with respect to an LED driver mounted on the LED backlight 152.
