To provide a picture display device which is provided with a parallax barrier, is capable of preventing the deterioration of resolution without increasing the number of pixels of a display element and is capable of suppressing the deterioration of brightness of the display.

The picture display device has the display element 109, a shift element 106 and the parallax barrier 105 in order from the observer side. The display element 109 has a first pixel group for displaying a first picture and a second pixel group for displaying a second picture. The parallax barrier 105 has a plurality of light transmission regions 105a that transmit polarized light of at least the specified polarized state and a plurality of light shielding regions 105b that shield polarized light of the specified polarized state. Each of a plurality of the light transmission regions 105a is arranged in accordance with each of a plurality of first pixels 120R belonging to the first pixel group. The shift element 106 can shift a principal ray of light transmitted by each of a plurality of the light transmission regions 105a of the parallax barrier 105 so as to correspond to each of a plurality of second pixels 120L belonging to the second pixel groups.
