PURPOSE:To eliminate the necessity for confirming a retrieving picture and to shorten remarkably the retrieving time by registering the retrieving picture showing the feature of the picture information registered together with the picture information, and displaying and retrieving it including the retrieving picture corresponding to the retrieving code when the picture information is registered. CONSTITUTION:After the large quantity of the picture information is registered at an optical disk 6, when the necessary picture information is retrieved, a control processor 8 searches the index area 31 of the optical disk 6, and displays a list of the retrieving code which belongs to the classification designated by the operator at a CRT 11. At such a time, an optical disk controller 5 is instructed so that a corresponding retrieving picture 23 can be also read from the optical disk 6, and the decoding of the retrieving picture 23 read from the optical disk 6 is instructed to an image processor 3. The decoded retrieving picture is displayed at the arrangement corresponding to a retrieving picture 23 read from the optical disk 6 at the CRT 11. As the result, the operator watches the displayed retrieving picture, and thereby, the operator can find out the necessary picture instantaneously.
