PURPOSE: To decrease a memory capacity required for a table for nonlinear conversion by converting an electric signal obtained by a color image pickup element at a matrix circuit and then indexing a color conversion table so as to apply signal processing.
CONSTITUTION: The output electric signal of a CCD line sensor 1 is amplified by an amplifier 2 and converted into a digital signal by an A/D converter 3. This signal is split into three colors, e.g., white, yellow and cyan corresponding to each color filter by a multiplexer 4 and recorded respectively in line memories 5, 6, 7. Devices 1∼4 are operated similarly to each CCD element, the signal is recorded in the line memories 5, 6 and 7 respectively and outputted as a one-line signal. Then a matrix circuit comprising a product sum operating circuit corresponds to a delicate color change among the image pickup elements and a coordinate is converted so that the signal is distributed uniformly in an address space of a memory for a color conversion table to obtain the small capacity of the memory enough for the table for color conversion.
