PURPOSE: To obtain a magnified picture being interpolated while keep the continuity of a picture element by using the picture elements around a point to be interpolated, obtaining a direction, in which the respective picture elements are continued, and executing interpolation processing by using this direction.
CONSTITUTION: To n pcs. of continuous point strings which are faced each other with the interpolation point between, the total sum of insulation values, which is the difference of the picture elements respectively correspondent in the arbitrary direction, is computed as a correlation value in the direction. The direction where the value is minimum is the direction where the picture elements are continued. Then, an interpolation value is computed by using the picture elements in that direction. Thus, the interpolated magnified picture can be prepared without losing the continuity of the picture elements on the picture and the picture element can be prevented from being degraded by the interruption of a thin line in the oblique direction.
