Abstract:
PURPOSE: To display encoding process at the time of encoding the hierarchy of picture data and to display each hierarchy independently of the resolution of the original picture data at the time of decoding.
CONSTITUTION: Picture data inputted from a scanner 8 are stored in a frame memory 4 and reduced to a half and the reduced picture data are stored in a memory 5. Hierarchical coding is executed based upon the unreduced picture data and the reduced picture data, and in each picture reduction, the reduced picture is displayed on a display 12. In the case of decoding, code data are decoded in each hierarchy and the picture data of each hierarchy are stored in the memories 4, 5. The picture data are displayed on the display 12, and when the whole picture can be displayed based upon the resolution of the display 12, the data are properly enlarged by an enlarging device 6. When the whole picture data can not be displayed, a part of the picture is displayed together with the reduced picture.
