PURPOSE: To reproduce a gradation picture with high quality in the case of a photographic picture or the like and a picture with high resolution in the case of a text picture or a line drawing by identifying a multi-value picture data and its picture element are picture elements belonging to a photograph or picture elements belonging to a line drawing such as a text and selecting one of two kinds of threshold matrices or over.
CONSTITUTION: A video controller or a host device receives an I/T signal 51 representing whether a multi-value data is a data to draw an image such as a photographic picture or a data to print out a font such as a character synchronously with a multi-value code data, and a selector 57 selects a 1st processing means 55 when the signal is at a high level to apply binarization processing with high gradation emphasizing the gradation. When the signal is at a low level, a 2nd processing means 56 is selected to apply binarization processing with high resolution emphasis.
