PURPOSE: To improve the picture quality when a picture signal for a laterally long image is recorded by a conventional VTR.
CONSTITUTION: A brightness component of a picture signal to be recorded is inputted to an input terminal 10. A picture signal for a laterally long image is linearly compressed in the horizontal direction. A frequency modulation circuit 16 frequency-modulates a brightness signal from an input terminal 10 and provides an output to a switch 22. A command discrimination circuit 26 discriminates a command representing a compression ratio from an input terminal 12 to select a trap circuit 18 by switches 22, 24 with respect to a picture of a normal image and selects a trap circuit 20 for a picture for a laterally long image. An attenuation rate of a frequency corresponding to a low frequency chrominance signal and an audio FM signal at a lower side band of a frequency modulation wave is made higher. An adder 28 superimposes the low frequency chrominance signal and the audio FM signal onto a brightness FM signal via the trap circuit 18 or 20.
