Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston assembly for a reciprocating engine.SOLUTION: A power cylinder system 8 for a reciprocating engine 10 includes a steel piston 20 configured to move within a cylinder 26 of the reciprocating engine 10. The system 8 also includes a groove 42 extending circumferentially about the piston 20 beneath a top land 40 of the piston 20 and configured to support a ring 44 having an inner circumferential face 134. One or more channels 94 are formed in the top land 40, and the one or more channels 94 are configured to facilitate transfer of combustion gases to a space 130 between a portion of the groove 42 and the inner circumferential face 134 of the ring 44.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
