Abstract:

To improve a conventional piston for an engine so as to significantly reduce friction.

In a piston 1 for an automobile engine, a streak A whose pitch is 15-30μm and depth is 5-15μm is provided to the outer peripheral surface of a skirt 2. The piston 1 slides to a cylinder block bore in the presence of lubricating oil. The sliding surface of the skirt 2 is covered with a hard carbon thin film 5. By so doing, scuffing resistance and wear resistance are improved, which leads to significant reduction of friction.
