Abstract:

To provide a piston ring made of steel for an internal combustion engine, which has excellent chipping resistance and can prevent chipping occurring in abutment parts or corner parts.

This piston ring made of the steel has a fundamental structure consisting of a bainitic single phase, or a structure mainly consisting of a bainitic phase, and containing a martensitic phase of ≤40% by area ratio. The piston ring preferably has a composition containing 0.5 to 1.0% C, ≤1.0% Si, ≤2.0% Mn, 1.0 to 20.0% Cr and 0.5 to 2.0% Mo, or further containing 3.0 to 8.0% Ni and/or ≤0.5% V.
