PURPOSE: To achieve a remarkable improvement of service life and obtain a favorable sealing effect by making a support surface as a flat surface continuously extended in the axial direction to cross all existing sealing edge radial flat surfaces.

CONSTITUTION: A rod packing includes an oil scraping ring 2 made of poly- tetrafluoroethylene material stored in a first groove 1 opened radially toward a piston rod and an O-ring 3 made of elastic rubber material. The O-ring 3 is engaged with a second groove of the oil scraping ring 2 to come into contact with the oil scraping ring 2, and on the other hand, supported on the base of the first groove 1. The oil scraping ring 2 comes into contact with the piston rod forming relatively moved mechanical members 4 at two circumferential sealing edges 7. The second groove is increased in axial length in the opening direction, the side of the oil scraping ring 2 is demarcated by the support surface 8, and the support surface 8 is elongated as a continuous axial surface over the radial flat surfaces of all existing sealing edges 7.
