To provide a piston supporting structure for supporting a piston 3 on a crankshaft 1 through a connecting rod 2, in which the weight saving and the strength intensification of the supporting structure entirety (especially, the piston 3, a piston pin 5 and a small end portion 22 of the connecting rod 2) are made compatible in a well-balanced manner.
A sliding contact face is formed between the piston 3 and the piston pin 5 and between the inner face of a crown 31 of the piston 3 and the outer face of the small end portion 22 of the connecting rod 2. The shape coefficient k (Q/R), which is expressed by the ratio of an outer diameter R of the small end portion 22 of the connecting rod 2 to a thickness (or the radial size) Q of a sectional area, through which a compression force to occur to follow an engine combustion in the small end portion 22 of the connecting rod 2 passes, is within a range of 0.5 ± 0.2, and a one-side opening angle θ of the sliding face on the side of the small end portion 22 of the connecting rod 2 is 60 degrees or more.
