Abstract:
A fuel injection system for large diesel engines has fuel injection jets. Each jet has a piston (20) whose mantle has a series of circular grooves (22) and a low-wear inert coating. The coating is hydrophobic and made of e.g. diamond-like-carbon (DLC) or a ceramic based on or including e.g. Al2O3, SiO2, TiN, Si3N4, SiC, TiC, WC or hard chrome. The piston moves up and down within a matching cylinder. The piston circular grooves have a groove width of 120-500 Microm and an interval of 100-2000 Microm. The groove interval is greater on the high-pressure side of the piston than on the low-pressure side.
