Abstract:
PURPOSE: A pitch that is prepared by adding a specific amount of wax to a specific heavy oil resulted from steam cracking of petroleum and treating the product with heat, thus inhibiting the formation of substances infusible and insoluble in quinoline and giving carbon fiber of high elasticity and strength.
CONSTITUTION: (A) 100pts.wt. of heavy oil boiling at 200°C or higher temperature, preferably at 200W450°C, are combined with (B) 10W200pts.wt. of a wax such as paraffin wax or low-molecular-weight polyethylene, preferably of 300W 500mol.wt. weight, and they are heat treated at 360W480°C, preferably 390W 460°C under a pressure of 2W50kg/cm2G, preferably 5W30kg/cm2G to give the objective pitch.
