PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plasma accelerator and a plasma acceleration method capable of obtaining large thrust.SOLUTION: A plasma accelerator 100 comprises: a magnetic field generator 2; a supply passage 1 which is disposed so as to cross a central region Q of the magnetic field generator 2 and which supplies plasma toward a downstream side; a cathode 3 disposed on the downstream side of the magnetic field generator 2; an anode 4 disposed on the upstream side of the cathode 3; and a voltage applying device 5 for applying a voltage Vac between the cathode 3 and the anode 4. The magnetic field generator 2 generates an axial magnetic field Bx in the central region Q of the magnetic field generator 2 and also generates a magnetic field including a radial magnetic field Bd on the downstream side of the magnetic field generator 2. The voltage applying device 5 generates an electric field Ex between the cathode 3 and the anode 4. The plasma supplied through the supply passage 1 is accelerated by a Hall electric field E generated by an interaction among an electron e- emitted from the cathode 3, the radial magnetic field Bd and the electric field Ex.
