Title:
PLASMA-INITIATED POLYMERIZATION
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS59202204
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce a super-MW linear polymer in good efficiency, by initiating the polymerization of a water-soluble monomer in the presence of water in a specified water-insoluble solvent by irradiation with plasma, and post-polymerizing the mixture in the absence of plasma.

CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of a water-soluble monomer, e.g., acrylic acid, is added to a water-immscible solvent of the formula (wherein R1 and R2 are each a 1W4C alkyl group), e.g., methyl acetate, (the monomer concentration of the entire reaction system being about 0.1W90wt%), and the resulting mixture is frozen by cooling with liquid nitrogen or the like, and deaerated in a vacuum of about 10-1W10-4 Torr. The mixture is irradiated with plasma (for about 1W 3,600sec at about 20W200W) to plasma-polymerize about 0.1W2wt% monomer, and further polymerized at about 1W60°C for about 1W25hr in the absence of plasma to complete the reaction.
