Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plasma melting furnace and an operating method therefor which prevents an imperfect melt from mixing in a molten slag overflowing from the furnace, without lowering the melting capacity whereby a homogeneous and high-quality water-granulated slag can be obtd.
SOLUTION: The plasma arc discharge is caused between a main electrode 4 hanging from the furnace top 1b and a start electrode 5 when the operation of the furnace 1 starts and also caused between the main electrode 5 and a furnace bottom electrode 6 disposed at the furnace bottom 1c after the furnace operation starts. In the furnace 1 an inert gas C is jetted from the main electrode 4 and the top ends of the start electrode 5 to hold a reductive atmosphere. The start electrode 5 is capable of lowering its top end to a gas-blowing position sinking under the molten slag B in the furnace 1 so as to blow the inert gas C into the molten slag B from the top end of the start electrode 5 after the operation starts.
