To provide a durable plasma thermal spray apparatus with an acceleration nozzle which is capable of forming dense films over a long period of time.
In the plasma thermal spray apparatus in which an acceleration nozzle accelerating and spraying a flying thermal spray material particles molten by the heat of the plasma is connected to its spray path through which a thermal spray material is sprayed together with plasma jet, the acceleration nozzle has a nozzle hole H the inside diameter of which increases continuously or stepwise toward its front end side. Slits T5-T7 to spray shield gas toward the front end side in a cylindrical form are arranged in more than one stages on the inside wall of the nozzle hole along the length direction of the nozzle hole. The shield gas spray opening of each stage is provided with gas flow deflection parts 3c and 4k to direct the shield gas flows roughly in parallel with the central axis of the acceleration nozzle. The edges of the front end parts of the gas flow deflection parts are blunted.
