PLASMA TYPE MELTING METHOD AND PLASMA TYPE MELTING FURNACE

PURPOSE: To make it possible to maintain the generation of plasma on an anode side when starting the operation of a furnace and prevent the temperature at the tip of an electrode of an anode torch from rising higher than that of a cathode torch by placing the graphite-made cathode torch at a higher position than a melting chamber and bringing the lower end of the anode torch into contact with a conductor at the bottom of the melting chamber.
CONSTITUTION: A plasma melting chamber forms a melting chamber 1a inside where a base metal 2 (conductor) is laid out at the bottom of the melting chamber 1a. A graphite-made anode torch 3 and a graphite cathode torch 4 are laid out in the upper part of the melting chamber 1a of this furnace melting main body 1. In case when starting a plasma type melting furnace, plasma operation gas B or more specifically nitrogen gas is supplied into the melting chamber 1a where the concentration of oxygen is specified to be 2% and below. Both electrode torches 3 and 4 are adapted to drop respectively and placed into contact with the base metal 2. Then, melting power is supplied to the electrode torches 3 and 4 from an electrode 5 and the cathode electrode torch 4 is raised upward, say, about 5 to 10mm above the base metal 2 from the electrode 5, thereby generating plasma arc between the base metal 2 and the cathode torch 4.
