Abstract:

To provide a plastic article which exhibits a reduced gas transmission and is useful for containers of food, beverage, etc., and for medical goods such as evacuation and blood collection tubes by coating a polymer with a gas transmission-limiting substance and exposing the polymer to a high-energy radiation.

The surface of a molded article comprising a polymer (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene naphthalate, polyvinyl chloride, a polyolefin, or polyvinylidene chloride) is coated with a gas transmission-limiting substance (e.g. silicon oxide, aluminum oxide, amorphous carbon, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, an epoxy resin or polyvinyl alcohol) and then exposed to a high-energy radiation to form free-radicals in the plastic, thus giving the objective plastic article reduced in transmission of gases such as air, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor and useful for food and beverage fields and medical uses.
