PURPOSE: To enhance the efficiency of mass transfer, by providing a weir which has a rectifying effect, on the tray of the plate tower which is equipped with downcomers and in which distillation, absorption, extraction or the like is caused.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid having flowed out of a side downcomer 1 onto the tray 3 is once blocked and rectified by the weir 4 and then reaches a central downcomer 2. Since the weir 4 is provided, some of the liquid flowing out toward the center of the tray 3 is blocked and divided so that enough rectification is caused all over the tray 3. Although a pressure loss is caused by the weir 4, the width of the weir and the distance between the weir and the tray 3 is appropriately selected to minimize the pressure loss and make the decrease in liquid treating capacity slight. Since the liquid flowing on the surface of the tray 3 is made uniform by the weir, gas and liquid treating capacity is much increased.
