Abstract:

PURPOSE: To automatically adjust the relative gap length between a platen and a recording head with high accuracy while preventing the generation of a dent on recording paper due to the contact with a carriage to the utmost.
CONSTITUTION: A stepping motor 5 moving a carriage loaded with a recording head in the vertical direction of a platen, a rotary encoder 12 having a detection mark provided to its circumference and outputting the quantity of rotation of a motor 5, that is, pulse signals in the number proportional to the moving quantity of the carriage and a time lag calculation means 22 moving the carriage from a reference position toward the platen to calculate the increment value of the time from the point of time when the driving pulse of the stepping motor 5 is generated to the point of time when the pulse signal from the rotary encoder 12 is generated are provided. A contact judging means 23 detecting that the increase value reaches a predetermined value is provided and, on the basis of the number of pulses of the rotary encoder 12 up to the point of time when a signal is outputted from the contact judging means 23, the thickness of paper is calculated by a paper thickness calculation means 24.
