To provide a plugged honeycomb structure which can collect large amount of particulate material and in which increment of pressure loss is suppressed.
The plugged honeycomb structure includes porous partition wall 5 which defines and forms a plurality of cells 4 which act as fluid flow passages. The plurality of cells 4 includes: a honeycomb structure part including cells 4 which have different opening areas on the cross sections perpendicular to the direction in which the cells 4 extend; inflow side plugged portions 8a arranged at edge parts on the inflow side of predetermined cells; and outflow side plugged portions arranged at edge parts on the outflow side of remaining cells. Outflow cells 4b being cells in which the inflow side plugged portions 8a are arranged and inflow cells 4a being cells in which the outflow side plugged portions are arranged are formed alternately with the partition wall 5 therebetween. The opening area arranged at the center region of the inflow cells 4a is larger than the opening area of the outflow cells 4b. The difference in opening area between the outflow cells 4b and the inflow cells 4a at peripheral region of the honeycomb structure part is smaller than the difference in opening area between the outflow cells 4b and the inflow cells 4a at center region.
