To provide a non-mechanical pointing device which is inexpensive, highly reliable, used by a user as is the case with the conventional mouse.
The pointing device 1 is attached to an opening 13 on the bottom and near an opening inside a housing and includes illumination light sources 2, 3 for illuminating the surface shape of an operation surface and an optical motion detection circuit 12 which generates a motion instruction signal indicating a motion to the illuminated surface shape visible via the openings in the directions of first and second axes. The optical motion detection circuit includes a plurality of optical detectors 10, each of which has output, a memory including a reference frame with a digitized output value of an optical detector and a digitized sample frame of the optical detector obtained next to the reference frame and a comparison frame is further correlated to the sample frame to confirm motions of the directions of the first and the second axes.
