Abstract:
PURPOSE:To prepare a polar cyclic olefin copolymer with excellent adhesive properties and compatibility with metals and other resins by copolymerizing ethylene, a specific cyclic olefin and a specific functional monomer in the presence of a specific catalyst and a specific organometallic compd. in a hydrocarbon solvent. CONSTITUTION:Ethylene, at least one member selected from the group consisting of a cyclic olefin of formula I (wherein n is 0 or a positive integer >=1; each of R<1>-R<12> is H, halogen or hydrocarbon radical) and a cyclic olefin of formula II (wherein m is 0 or a positive integer >=1; l is positive integer >=3), and a functional monomer of formula III (wherein p is 1-3; R<1> is 2C or higher hydrocarbon radical; X is a functional group contg. O and/or N) are copolymerized in the presence of more than equimolar amt. (based on the amt. of said functional group) of an organometallic compd. and/or a halogenated metallic compd. and in the presence of a catalyst comprising a soluble V compd. and an organoaluminum compd. in a hydrocarbon solvent, to give a polar cyclic olefin copolymer with excellent transparency, resistance to heat, chemicals and solvents, electrical and mechanical strength, processability and dimensional stability as well as excellent adhesive properties and compatibility with other materials.
