Abstract:

To perform a PMD compensation by easily providing equalizers at proper places of an optical transmission line where the influence of coupling between polarization modes and nonlinear optical effect can not be ignored.

The equivalent refractive index of an optical waveguide 3 having a birefringent waveguide grating 1 causing Bragg reflection is given birefringency and polarization mode dispersion of polarized lights L1 and L2 of an incident light LI which is inputted from the input/output end of the optical waveguide 3 which is a group delay time difference Δτ between the polarized lights La nd L2 is compensated by changing the positions of reflection points Pi and P2 of the Bragg reflection on the optical waveguide by varying the equivalent refractive index along the length of the optical waveguide.
